About the Speakers:
Tony Bowen
Lead Consultant, Fiscal Management Associates (FMA)
As a Lead Consultant with FMA, Tony leads the Washington, D.C. office and delivers strategic and operational insights to nonprofit and philanthropic clients locally and across the country.
Tony has served in foundation leadership and has a passion for building the capacity of nonprofits to lead from a position of strength. His nonprofit experience spans advocacy, arts & culture, education, human services, and democracy and crosses operations, finances, grants management, training, program management, development, and research functions.
Prior to joining FMA, Tony was Managing Director at Democracy Fund, a national private foundation, and Democracy Fund Voice, its sister c4, as its first head of operations while the organization quadrupled its operating budget. His accomplishments included growing the Operations Team from 2 to 9 staff providing all finance, grants management, legal, compliance, technology, HR administration, contracts, and office management support. He also led the foundation’s grants committees and the training and curriculum development for program staff on assessing nonprofit financials, due diligence, grant structure, and becoming excellent grantmakers.
Tony has held programmatic positions at the Annie E. Casey Foundation on the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Grantmakers for Effective Organizations. He is the author of Forty Years of LGBTQ Philanthropy and his writing on foundations has appeared in the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Tony co-founded an LGBTQ youth center in Kansas City, MO and served as vice president and steering committee member of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy DC Chapter from 2013-2015. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Leadership from William Jewell College, and an M.A. in Philanthropic Studies from Indiana University.
Chai Jindasurat
Policy Director, Nonprofit New York
Chai Jindasurat joined Nonprofit New York in March 2019 as Policy Director. Prior to joining Nonprofit New York, Chai served as a Senior Policy Analyst in the Mayor's Office of Management and Budget (OMB), a Public Policy Fellow at the Citizens Budget Commission, and directed national policy work at the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. While at OMB, Chai was given a Volunteer Service Award by the Budget Director for creating OMB's first Employee Resource Group (ERG) for LGBTQ and ally staff. Chai currently serves as a financial management Teaching Colleague at New York University's Wagner School of Public Service, where he obtained his MPA as a David Bohnett fellow and Point Scholar, the national LGBTQ scholarship fund. Chai also holds a BFA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Katie Leonberger
President and Chief Executive Officer, Community Resource Exchange (CRE)
Katie is the President and CEO of CRE. In addition to her role leading the organization, Katie specializes in organizational development, innovation, risk engagement and planning.
Before joining CRE, Katie was a senior leader on the Government Innovation team at Bloomberg Philanthropies, where she led initiatives to promote public sector innovation and spread ideas among cities. She led and scaled Cities of Service before it spun out of the foundation. She also developed and launched new programs, including the Mayors Challenge – a prize competition that encourages local governments to develop bold solutions to city problems that expanded abroad. Her private sector experience includes serving as a consultant at McKinsey & Company – where she focused on organizational development and strategy for foundations and financial institutions – and a senior analyst at Cornerstone Research, an economics consulting firm. Katie serves on the boards of Cities of Service and Morgan Stanley GIFT (Global Impact Funding Trust), and as Board Chair of the Microlumbia Fund, a nonprofit impact investing fund she co-founded at Columbia Business School that invests in and provides pro bono consulting services to microfinance institutions and social enterprises. She holds an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and an M.A. in international policy studies, as well as a dual B.A. in economics and international relations with honors, both from Stanford University.
Katie was one of New York Nonprofit Media’s “40 Under 40” Rising Stars in 2016 and is an Adjunct Professor at NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. She authored the chapter “Key Drivers of Successful Implementation of Mayor-led Impact Volunteering Strategies in American Cities” in National Service and Volunteerism: Achieving Impact in Our Communities (2015).
Katie lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children, and is on a quest to find the perfect baked good now that she no longer has an Amy’s Bread in her neighborhood.
Social Impact Webinar Series
This webinar series was designed to engage our social enterprise community during New York's Shelter in Place recommendation. Our intention is to continue to disseminate best practices for the social enterprise sector, as well as discuss the pressing social and environmental challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure vulnerable and marginalized community needs are still addressed.
