The Cynefin Framework: A Leader's Framework for Decision Making

One of the most important skills a leader can possess, and yet is rarely taught or understood, is the ability to know what kind of problem they are dealing with. The Cynefin framework introduces three domains of problems: ordered, complex and chaotic. Ordered domains are generally predictable while the complex have no linear causality. Of critical importance is the difference between these two and the difference in methods for approaching each domain. Many of the trickiest problems we face fall into the complex, and yet we mistake them or wish them to be ordered. This applies to almost any human centered issue in organizations and organizations focused on social impact where the change generally falls into the realm of the complex.

This introduction to the Cynefin framework, provides an essential tool for leaders to identify the type of problem they are working on and will introduce some of the principles and methods for approaching those in the much less well understood realm of the complex.
