Calliope Webber
Director of Gas, Power and Renewable Projects, BP

Calliope Webber graduated with a Chemistry degree and a Masters in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College, London and a Post Graduate Certificate in Cross-Sector Partnerships from Cambridge University Programme for Industry.  A role with BP Gas and Powers’ leadership team, responsible for developing the ‘clean/green’ business and emissions trading, led her to a position as an advisor to the World Bank’s policy division in oil and gas (2003-2006). As part of a small core team, drawn from the public and private sectors, this partnership focused on creating workable strategic/economic frameworks to reduce emissions and contribute to sustainable development.

The Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership (GGFR) was formed after the World Summit on Sustainable Development at Jo’burg 2002 to address energy and environmental issues associated with global gas flaring. During the first three years of the program a multi-donor trust fund was established to fund its efforts: 10 Governments and 10 industrial companies were enrolled as part of program and several Clean Development Mechanism projects were initiated.  Access to modern energy services to address energy poverty, small scale gas utilization for poverty alleviation and adaptation were several of the GGFR activities.

Since 2006, on returning to BP, Ms. Webber has had a focus on building strategy and implementation plans across the alternative energy and gas business for clean energy development.
