Speaker Bio

John Katzman, Founder, The Princeton Review

John KatzmanA graduate of Princeton University, John Katzman founded The Princeton Review in 1981, initially teaching SAT preparation to high-school students in New York City. Despite being the founder of a successful business based on preparing for a wide range of standardized tests, Mr. Katzman is an outspoken critic of the modern preoccupation with standardized testing and has argued that many tests are no better indicators of achievement in their relevant fields than grades and scores on other tests (such as the Advanced Placement exams) that students already complete. He is often invited to speak on topics related to education and the measurement of academic achievement.

Mr. Katzman’s innovative ideas on educational reform have made him one of the nation’s leading authorities on testing, post-secondary admissions and data-differentiated instruction. He is the co-author of five books on testing and admissions and a frequent lecturer and panelist. He has helped launch several companies, though 2tor, his latest venture, is only the second he has personally run.

2tor, through its online platform 2tor.com, looks to partner with preeminent institutions of higher education to deliver rigorous, selective degree programs online. Their first partnership with University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education will offer an online Master of Arts in Teaching program with the goal of harnessing the power of modern technology to train and certify teachers for urban schools.

“We need new models to teach students in our major cities to meet the challenges that face our country. We need to move our public school system out of the 19th century and into the 21st century.”
