Speaker Bio

Laura Smith, Executive Director of Human Resources, NYC Department of Education

Laura Smith develops strategic human capital services for the DOE's central and administrative offices and is responsible for modernizing overall operations. Previously, she launched an internal services market and subsequently rolled-out bundled support packages to the DOE's 1400+ schools.

Before joining the DOE, she developed back-office solutions for charter schools at the NYC Center for Charter School Excellence. She began her work in urban education as a staff action officer for the San Diego City Schools focusing on high school reform. Previously, she managed software and professional development implementations for Scientific Learning Corporation's public education clients. Early in her career, Ms. Smith taught environmental science in Florida, Maine and the San Juan Islands.

She earned a BS in Human Development at Cornell University and a MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
