Internship Description

Isabel Hoyos Arango, ’24SPS, researched decarbonization pathways across industries, translating technical reports into accessible formats, and collaborating on slide decks and case studies to inspire action toward climate solutions.

This summer, I had the opportunity to work on a project analyzing decarbonization pathways for the cement and solar industries with the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI), within the Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change.

My role involved researching and compiling data on various technologies and strategies for reducing carbon emissions. I created slide decks that presented this information in an accessible format for industry leaders, including overviews of different technologies, promising innovations, deployment strategies, policy considerations, and solutions to common challenges. Additionally, I participated in a workshop that brought together cement industry executives, startup founders, lobbyists, and academics to discuss current trends and challenges in the sector. This project aligned with CKI's mission to drive significant change in hard-to-abate industries and contribute to overall economic decarbonization by equipping stakeholders with actionable insights and strategic recommendations.

My MS in sustainability management provided a strong foundation in climate science, sustainability practices, and finance. I applied these skills by conducting detailed research on decarbonization technologies and assessing their financial implications. My program's focus on integrating decarbonization goals with financial performance was particularly relevant to sustainability management and developing strategies that balanced environmental impact with economic feasibility. Furthermore, the emphasis on effective communication was crucial when translating complex technical information into clear, actionable slide decks for diverse audiences. These skills were instrumental in ensuring that the information was both accurate and comprehensible, facilitating informed decision making.

One major challenge I faced was my lack of prior experience specifically with the cement and solar industries. This required me to quickly learn about these sectors while developing presentations. Translating complex technical data into actionable insights while simultaneously researching was demanding. I also had no previous experience with creating consultant-style presentations or using slide masters, which meant a steep learning curve in presentation design. Despite these challenges, I gained proficiency in designing visually cohesive and informative slides and contributed to the development of our slide master, ultimately enhancing my ability to communicate technical information effectively.

My internship with CKI broadened my understanding of the practical applications of decarbonization strategies and highlighted the importance of effective communication in translating technical data into actionable insights. It underscored the need to integrate financial considerations with environmental goals and demonstrated the value of bridging technical knowledge with strategic decision making. Moving forward, I aim to apply these insights and skills in the fields of impact and climate finance, focusing on initiatives that drive sustainable investment and policy changes. This role has reinforced my commitment to contributing to the transition to a low-carbon economy and provided me with valuable experience for future endeavors in this field. I also learned how to design really fantastic slides, a skill whose value, I believe, should not be underestimated.
