Internship Description
Yao-Shin Daphne Huang ’25 joined SolarKal, a solar energy advisor and B2B marketplace in the United States, where she contributed to the company's go-to-market fundraising strategy and analyzed the competitive landscape to craft a market positioning strategy. Through the fundraising efforts, Daphne helped the company enter its next growth phase to make solar energy accessible to more organizations.
This summer, my main project focused on developing revenue growth strategies for SolarKal. I started with a detailed analysis of the unit economics for the project team to assess its revenue-generating efficiency. This analysis revealed two revenue growth opportunities within the current business model, which could double the theoretical revenue without incurring additional costs. From there, I explored additional strategies to further grow SolarKal’s revenue to the next level, including introducing new service offerings to meet unexplored market demands and expanding headcount to increase capacity. To support my recommendations, I projected the company's profitability over the next five years to showcase the anticipated ramp-up period and growth afterwards. These recommendations align with SolarKal’s goal to scale the business, providing a strategic approach to expanding its market presence. Increasing headcount and offering new services will broaden SolarKal’s customer reach and boost market share. Moreover, the additional revenue will support future expenditures and investments, ensuring that SolarKal has the resources needed for continued growth and long-term success.
When brainstorming revenue growth strategies to scale the business, I recalled the lessons I learned from my Strategy class. One key takeaway was that a successful business relies on establishing and leveraging a competitive advantage. With this principle in mind, I took a step back to evaluate what SolarKal does better than its competitors. This analysis enabled me to develop growth strategies that will focus on reinforcing the company’s unique strengths, ensuring that SolarKal utilizes its resources and funds efficiently. Additionally, I applied the accounting knowledge and financial statement analysis skills from the Accounting and Corporate Finance classes to build a financial model. I followed the accounting rules to connect the financial statements, then conducted a sense check to validate my forecasts, paying close attention to key financial metrics taught in Corporate Finance. By integrating these academic insights with practical business analysis, I made a reasonable revenue growth recommendation and provided financial data to support my proposal effectively.
The biggest challenge I faced during the internship was adjusting my perspectives. With no prior experience working at an early-stage company, my understanding of business operations was shaped by my background in analyzing large, mature organizations. As a result, my initial idea for scaling up SolarKal was based on strategies that worked for established companies but would be unsuitable for a business looking to grow rapidly. Recognizing this mismatch required a significant shift in my thinking, helping me understand the priorities crucial for an early-stage company's survival and becoming more comfortable with taking business risks. Later, as I prepared my presentation to detail my recommendations, I encountered another challenge: effectively communicating complex analysis to my audience. I had to adapt my perspective once more, this time to understand how to present my findings clearly and convincingly. This involved simplifying the math and explaining the rationale behind each calculation. By adjusting my point of view to align with my audience’s, I was able to present my recommendations in a more effective manner. This experience highlighted the importance of flexibility in perspective, especially when transitioning between different business environments.
It has been an enlightening and rewarding experience working at SolarKal. I gained a deep understanding of the solar energy industry and the unique nature of early-stage companies. However, one of the most valuable lessons for me was learning how to make strategic business decisions for a growing company. I discovered how crucial it is to adapt strategies and decisions to the specific needs and constraints of a startup environment. Through extensive research and analysis into SolarKal’s business model and value proposition, I also gained insight into how each role within the company functions and interacts, such as individual gears that turn together to keep the business running smoothly. I learned the importance of having a holistic view of business operations, identifying how every function contributes to the overall success and growth of the company.
I really enjoyed the work I did at SolarKal, particularly the financial analysis and strategy development. This hands-on experience not only reinforced my passion for these areas but also provided me with practical skills that I am eager to apply in my future career. The ability to blend financial acumen with strategic thinking has been immensely fulfilling, and I look forward to continuing to develop these skills as I advance in my professional journey.
