Internship Description
Taicheng Jin, ’25SIPA, worked within specific industry verticals to study decarbonization pathways and business climate transition models and curated them into digestible technical reports, executive briefs, and business school case studies. He provided reliable, data-driven, and actionable information that helped business leaders pick investable and scalable green technologies that increased efficiency and reduced carbon intensity.
This summer, I had the opportunity to contribute to the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI), within the Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change, covering the solar and wind sectors. The team is organized by industry verticals, with the objective of critically assessing opportunities for decarbonization through different technologies and asking questions such as: How does each technology reduce emissions? By how much? What are the barriers to widespread adoption? The work involved extensive research and critical analysis, akin to a venture capitalist seeking investment in emerging technologies or an infrastructure fund evaluating a new solar and battery project for its portfolio. Daily tasks balanced independent research and group discussions. Individually, we gathered research reports, memos, summaries, white papers, and similar documents from industry sources, think tanks, international organizations, and investment managers. As a group, we could be working on the microeconomics of refining polysilicon to the modeling of decarbonization potential of solar as transmitted through electrification of steel manufacturing. Our role was to understand, synthesize, compare, and contrast this information, keeping in mind that each source presents a narrative supported by selectively chosen data. We then distilled these insights into reports that struck a balance between utility, immediacy, pedagogy, and tradition.
Overall, this project equipped me with both knowledge and practical skills related to solar and wind technologies and their potential over the coming decades, for which I am grateful. Through this experience, I relearned the importance of persistence, communication, and curiosity. In many ways, CKI fosters qualities that traditional corporations often deprioritize due to short-sightedness. Without the pressure of a client constantly imposing demands, we had the freedom to explore, though always with purpose. This allowed us to hone both our qualitative and quantitative skills. I improved not only in gathering and presenting information but also in supporting my findings with visuals and data-driven/financial analysis. I learned to build a cash-flow model, which helped me understand the sensitivities of a project’s viability, often influenced by a few key parameters, such as state-level REC schemes. I realized that more complex data analysis isn’t necessarily better, data that tells a clear and compelling story is far more effective. Additionally, I developed the ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with expertise in sustainability, engineering, and finance.
As with any analyst role, data tends to be scarce when you need it and overwhelming when you don’t. Learning how to manage and not be overwhelmed by data is a key skill, though it often requires some initial struggle. Over time, your survival instinct, paired with refined data-sifting skills and support from colleagues, will prevail, allowing you to navigate successfully.
I also sometimes regret not being able to explore topics more deeply due to time constraints and project deadlines. Balancing breadth of coverage with depth of analysis is a challenge, and finding the right equilibrium is rarely easy. Lastly, working remotely in a different time zone occasionally left me feeling isolated from the team, despite our best efforts to stay connected. This improved when I was physically on campus, but a project’s success hinges on effective coordination and collaboration. Ensuring everyone’s input is considered while maintaining the project’s coherence and momentum was perhaps the most difficult hidden challenge. Significant time and effort were devoted to aligning viewpoints and keeping the team moving toward a shared objective.
Overall, I truly felt like an analyst. The role pushed me to make assumptions when I was uncomfortable and encouraged me to offer opinions even when imposter syndrome held me back. I had a tendency to undervalue my perspective, but this project — and the supportive team I worked with — reinforced the worth of my contributions, even in cases where we disagreed. Motivation, for me, stems from a blend of philosophical alignment, camaraderie, and achievement. I have never felt as motivated to be part of a project as I did with this one. I used to somewhat cynically believe that people are driven primarily by a relentless pursuit of material gain. However, I’ve come to realize that true fulfillment comes from the alignment of values and skills. If you are miserable, no amount of self-control can sustain good work. After all, control is a finite resource. CKI’s mission — to advance the scaling of clean technology with scientific rigor, innovation, and integrity — aligned perfectly with my personal values and skill set. That alignment was far more rewarding than any paycheck could be.
