Internship Description
Birru Pagi Lucha, ’25SPS, leveraged data analysis and discussions with experts, synthesized insights to craft actionable recommendations, and guided businesses navigating the complex transition to a sustainable, net zero future.
As the team lead for biofuel and energy storage with the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI), within the Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change, I spearheaded a project to investigate the role of technologies in decarbonization. Our research focused on technical feasibility, economic viability, and environmental implications. This project aligned directly with the organization's mission to provide businesses with actionable insights for sustainable investments. By understanding development trends and addressing key barriers, we empowered businesses to make informed decisions and contribute to a low-carbon future.
As the team lead, I leveraged my expertise in both sustainability management and management consulting to support my work with CKI. My understanding of energy system fundamentals, life cycle analysis, and business and climate change policy, combined with my experience in consulting within the energy sector, provided a comprehensive perspective on the challenges and opportunities related to biofuels and energy storage. This allowed me to develop a robust analysis that was both technically sound and practically applicable.
One of the primary challenges we faced in establishing the new biofuels and energy storage workstream was defining its scope and focus. With such a vast and complex topic, it was essential to identify the most critical areas to investigate. Additionally, developing insightful research questions that could drive meaningful insights was another hurdle. Finally, managing a diverse team with varying levels of experience and availability presented unique challenges. To overcome these obstacles, we prioritized effective leadership, open communication, and collaboration. By fostering a supportive team environment and maintaining a clear focus on our project's objectives, we were able to successfully navigate these challenges and deliver valuable insights.
My time at CKI has been incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally. One of the biggest takeaways has been the valuable network I've built with the team across various programs at Columbia Business School. This network has provided me with unique insights and opportunities for growth. I've also gained a deep understanding of biofuels and energy storage through my work on content development and problem-solving with industry experts. This knowledge has been invaluable and has reinforced my passion for transitioning to the renewable energy sector. The skills I've developed, such as research, analysis, and collaboration, will be essential in my future endeavors.
Overall, this experience has exceeded my expectations. I'm excited to apply the knowledge and skills I've gained to contribute to a sustainable future.
