Internship Description

Anika Behrndt ’25SPS served as fellows with the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at Columbia Business School’s Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change. CKI applies quantitative research tools and comparative policy analysis to evaluate interventions and translate technical findings into clear, actionable materials for future business leaders and diverse audiences with the practical, sector-specific knowledge needed to chart credible decarbonization pathways. Anika developed a slide deck on plastics decarbonization that highlighted major challenges and pathways to reduce emissions across the value chain.

As a fellow with the Climate Knowledge Initiative, I initiated a new research project on decarbonising the plastics industry. The goal was to produce a slide deck tailored to producers, processors, consumer brands, and investors that highlighted the sector’s major challenges and the pathways available to reduce emissions and pollution across the value chain. This project was closely aligned with CKI’s mission to translate complex scientific research into content that is accessible and actionable for decision makers. Plastics are intertwined with energy systems, geopolitics, and economic development, so the research demanded careful synthesis of multiple layers. By the end of the summer, I had developed a deeper understanding of the plastics sector and created practical outputs to support more ambitious decarbonisation action.

My Sustainability Management program provided the skill set to undertake this work. I strengthened my research capabilities by analysing scientific papers and synthesising them into clear takeaways. I advanced my data‑visualisation skills, learning to present technical information in compelling ways. Serving as project lead required me to coordinate a team with varying schedules and work styles; I applied and expanded my management skills by balancing deadlines with constructive feedback and fostering collaboration.

The challenges were numerous. Information on plastics is abundant and sometimes conflicting, making it difficult to identify the most relevant issues. Emissions estimates, recycling potential, and cost projections varied widely depending on the source, so I had to assess credibility and context. Managing the team added another layer; I balanced my own research with guiding others and adapting to shifting schedules. These challenges sharpened my judgment, prioritisation, and management skills.

The internship left me with a nuanced understanding of plastics decarbonisation and improved my ability to turn data into insights. It demystified consulting by showing the value of deep, curiosity‑driven research and taught me to synthesise datasets into new narratives. I also gained confidence in my project management and leadership abilities, learning that effective leadership is about creating conditions for good work to flourish.
