Internship Description
Khande Jae Fisher ’25CLA served as fellows with the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at Columbia Business School’s Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change. CKI applies quantitative research tools and comparative policy analysis to evaluate interventions and translate technical findings into clear, actionable materials for future business leaders and diverse audiences with the practical, sector-specific knowledge needed to chart credible decarbonization pathways. Khande conducted research across nuclear energy, maritime decarbonization, and critical minerals, translating technical, economic, and policy research into accessible, data-driven presentations that conveyed scientific findings through strategy-oriented visuals.
As a fellow with the Climate Knowledge Initiative I conducted research across three workstreams—nuclear energy, maritime decarbonisation, and critical minerals—to generate actionable insights for decarbonisation. CKI’s mission is to provide decision makers with reliable, data‑driven information, and my work directly supported this goal. I analysed supply chains, emissions profiles, and technology readiness to identify areas of value creation, emerging opportunities, and pressing challenges. Because there is an overwhelming volume of information available, I focused on distilling the most compelling stories and presenting them with clear, evidence‑based visuals. Seeing my research integrated into CKI’s published decks and knowing that it will inform broader conversations on decarbonisation was deeply rewarding.
My Sustainability Science degree provided the analytical foundation for this work. I drew on skills in data interpretation, climate systems, and sustainability principles and paired them with economic, financial, and social perspectives from peers. This interdisciplinary approach allowed me to move beyond purely scientific analysis and ask strategic questions about finance, policy, and deployment. I improved my ability to translate academic research into practical recommendations for industry leaders, policymakers, and investors.
One challenge was designing slides to communicate our findings effectively. CKI’s research outputs take the form of comprehensive slide decks, and presenting technical data in an engaging, accessible way was new to me. Tools such as Think‑Cell helped, and collaboration with fellows from consulting, finance, and policy backgrounds provided constant feedback. Our iterative culture encouraged me to refine my visuals and narratives until the content was both rigorous and compelling.
The fellowship expanded my skill set and broadened my perspective on sustainability. I learned that in addition to what we study, it is crucial to communicate why it matters and how to act on it. Working with a diverse team reinforced the value of clear communication and collaboration in tackling complex challenges. I leave CKI committed to advancing practical decarbonisation solutions and better equipped to bridge research and decision making.
