Anda Wang ’25 served as fellows with the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at Columbia Business School’s Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change. CKI applies quantitative research tools and comparative policy analysis to evaluate interventions and translate technical findings into clear, actionable materials for future business leaders and diverse audiences with the practical, sector-specific knowledge needed to chart credible decarbonization pathways. Anda worked on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) by mapping relationships between policy incentives, technology readiness, and market adoption, supplementing research with founder and investor interviews to ensure practical applicability.

As a Tamer Fellow with the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI), I undertook an applied strategy project to understand why promising climate technologies fail to scale. My core task was to develop a comprehensive framework that identifies and analyses the main bottlenecks—operational, financial, and market‑based—that impede the growth of climate‑tech ventures. This work goes beyond technology and diagnoses systemic hurdles, helping investors and business leaders make more sophisticated decisions about capital allocation. It fit squarely with CKI’s mission to provide actionable insights that enable a scalable, low‑carbon future.

The fellowship allowed me to apply analytical and strategic skills from my master’s studies. I used systems thinking to map relationships between policy incentives, technological readiness, and market adoption and drew on corporate finance principles to examine barriers such as the “valley of death” for hardware start‑ups and the risk aversion of institutional capital. The project required synthesising qualitative and quantitative analysis to produce clear, defensible insights that speak to both entrepreneurs and investors.

The complexity of the climate sector was a challenge. Initially, identifying universal bottlenecks felt like boiling the ocean. To overcome this, I adopted a hypothesis‑driven approach: I focused on specific sub‑sectors, identified recurring patterns, and then tested them for broader applicability. Bridging the gap between academic research and the lived experience of entrepreneurs was another hurdle. I conducted interviews with founders and investors to pressure‑test assumptions, ensuring that the framework was grounded in reality.

This immersion left a lasting impact on me. I gained an operator‑level understanding of the interplay among innovation, capital, and policy, and learned that success depends on more than just a brilliant technology. Navigating regulatory landscapes, securing non‑dilutive funding, and building resilient supply chains are equally critical. The framework I developed has universal relevance; the principles of identifying systemic bottlenecks apply to any sector facing transformation. The experience has strengthened my passion for tackling large‑scale societal problems and equipped me with a versatile strategic mindset that I will bring to future roles.
