Moby is on a mission to divert toxic microplastics from the environment and landfills. The company achieves this by capturing and reusing microplastics that are released during routine laundry practices. Their sustainable approach tackles the most common type of microplastics and protects nature, people's health, and frontline communities everywhere.
During my time at Moby, I closely collaborated with founder and CEO Yoni Ronn and CTO Siddhant Srivastava, to develop a new B2B-focused revenue model. The goal was to identify target markets and sectors for Moby, establish a pricing strategy, analyze core costs, and project how these factors would influence the company's profitability and cash flow over the next three years. This project directly aligns with Moby's mission to combat microfiber pollution and promote sustainability through innovative solutions. By addressing the primary source of microplastic contamination — synthetic textiles — we are actively contributing to environmental conservation and improving public health outcomes.
At Moby, I applied a range of skill sets acquired through my MBA program. As a pre-revenue startup, Moby lacked structured financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow projections. Developing the new revenue model enabled me to forecast income sources, associated costs, and the financial implications of commercial activities. I took the lead in structuring their initial financial statements, which was crucial for strategic planning and investor relations. Moreover, my discussions on growth strategies and cash flow management were important in understanding the needs of a funded startup. These conversations explored critical aspects such as operational funding requirements and long-term sustainability planning. Drawing on my engineering background, I also engaged with suppliers to negotiate manufacturing agreements for the filters. This involved detailed discussions on operational specifications and logistics, ensuring seamless production from concept to final product. This experience provided valuable insights into supply chain management and operational efficiency, enhancing my overall contribution to Moby's strategic goals.
One significant challenge was navigating the uncertainties inherent in the laundering market, which is not traditionally well-established. This posed difficulties in accurately forecasting market trends, customer behaviors, and revenue projections for Moby's innovative filters. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive data on microplastic pollution and consumer adoption of sustainable laundering practices presented hurdles in developing accurate financial forecasts and growth strategies. Without robust data, assessing market demand, and effectively positioning Moby's solutions proved challenging. Furthermore, negotiating with suppliers to establish manufacturing agreements for the filters required overcoming logistical complexities, since they are based in distant continents. Balancing operational specifications with cost efficiency was critical in maintaining product viability and competitive pricing.
My experience at Moby has left me with takeaways that have shaped my professional and personal growth. First, I gained a deep appreciation for the importance of addressing environmental challenges through innovative solutions. Working towards Moby's mission to divert toxic microplastics from the environment accentuated the significance of sustainable practices in safeguarding ecosystems and public health. On a professional level, I sharpened my skills in strategic planning and financial analysis. Developing Moby's B2B-focused revenue model allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge from my MBA program to real-world scenarios, particularly in structuring financial statements and forecasting profitability. Also, by working closely with the founder and CTO, I learned the importance of effective teamwork and communication in driving organizational goals forward. As I was part of a small team, “job roles” did not exist — every teammate was working on a few different tasks at the same time.
Beyond the technical aspects, my time at Moby filled me with a sense of purpose in contributing to sustainable development. Witnessing the impact of our efforts on environmental conservation and community well-being fueled my passion for driving positive change through entrepreneurship and innovation.
