Internship Description
Dimple Dhawan ’25 collaborated with Alinea Ventures, which is dedicated to supporting non-traditional founders in early-stage digital infrastructure technology companies. She contributed to deal sourcing, portfolio support, and brand management initiatives, aligning with the firm's commitment to diversity of thought and supporting founders from underrepresented communities.
During my internship at Alinea Ventures, I worked on deal sourcing, due diligence, and portfolio support for early-stage startups. This project aligned perfectly with Alinea's mission of investing in and supporting innovative companies, particularly those led by underrepresented founders. By researching potential investments, conducting thorough analyses, and providing support to portfolio companies, I directly contributed to Alinea's goal of fostering diversity in the startup ecosystem. The work was particularly rewarding as it allowed me to identify promising ventures that could make a significant impact while also supporting non-traditional founders. This experience gave me a deep appreciation for Alinea's commitment to promoting inclusivity and innovation in the venture capital space. I felt proud to be part of a team that not only seeks financial returns but also strives to create lasting positive change in the startup landscape.
My internship at Alinea Ventures allowed me to apply and enhance several key skills from my degree program. I utilized my financial analysis skills to evaluate potential investments, creating detailed financial models and conducting market research. My strategic decision-making abilities were put to the test as I assessed the viability and potential of various startups. The project also demanded strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as I prepared investment recommendations and participated in meetings with founders and team members. Additionally, I applied my knowledge of market trends and industry analysis to identify promising opportunities in fintech, AI, and cybersecurity. The internship provided a practical platform to translate theoretical knowledge into real-world applications, significantly deepening my understanding of venture capital operations and startup ecosystems.
One of the main challenges I encountered was conducting thorough due diligence on early-stage startups with limited available information. It required creative problem-solving and resourcefulness to gather meaningful data points and make informed investment recommendations. Another challenge was balancing multiple responsibilities, including deal sourcing, portfolio support, and brand management activities. Time management and prioritization became crucial skills to develop. Additionally, participating in fundraising events and building Alinea's brand pushed me out of my comfort zone, requiring me to develop stronger networking and public speaking abilities. Navigating the complexities of the venture capital landscape, specifically understanding different investment structures and terms, was also challenging at times. However, these obstacles provided valuable learning opportunities and helped me grow both professionally and personally.
My internship has been an incredibly enriching experience, providing me with deep insights into the venture capital industry and startup ecosystem. I gained practical skills in deal sourcing, due diligence, and portfolio management that will be invaluable in my future career. The experience also honed my analytical thinking, communication, and decision-making abilities. I learned the importance of looking beyond financial metrics to consider the broader impact of investments, particularly in supporting underrepresented founders. Working closely with experienced partners like Jessie Lam and Toan Huynh exposed me to different leadership styles and strategic approaches in venture capital. Perhaps most importantly, I developed a strong appreciation for the role of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and creating value in the startup world. This internship has solidified my interest in venture capital and social impact investing, and I feel well-equipped to pursue opportunities in this field moving forward.
