Internship Description
Hannah Lindstrom '24 interned with Acumen, a nonprofit impact investment fund focused on investing in social enterprises that help the world's most impoverished communities out of poverty. Hannah's responsibilities included creating an internal overview of Acumen's pioneer investments and conducting an in-depth analysis into market access for smallholder farmers.
At Acumen, my primary focus was to refine and enhance the firm's impact-centric investment approach, anchoring it more deeply in empirical data. This paradigm shift aimed to accentuate the scalability of agribusinesses, striving for an equilibrium where sustainable business practices would resonate with tangible societal change. The challenge wasn't just the mammoth task of recalibrating reporting metrics for over 50 companies; it was about ensuring that each of these changes aligned harmoniously with Acumen's mission of blending profitability with purpose. An illustrative challenge I encountered was addressing the data inconsistencies across portfolio companies. Owing to the lack or ambiguity of data, I often found myself making educated assumptions to bridge the gaps, ensuring that our analyses remained as robust and reliable as possible.
At Columbia Business School, my MBA curriculum endowed me with a multifaceted array of skills, which I actively employed at Acumen. My rigorous analytical training proved essential when devising methodologies for understanding market shares and creating detailed market-sizing models. These analytical undertakings were directly influenced by courses centered around data-driven decision-making and strategic analysis. Additionally, the strategic management courses I undertook played a pivotal role as I crafted Acumen's five-year roadmap. This entailed blending foresight, assessing market dynamics, and aligning these insights with the broader organizational vision.
My financial training from the MBA was also paramount. It informed my perspective on investment considerations, valuation processes, and gauging the economic feasibility of ventures. Beyond the technical, the leadership and team dynamics modules from my program were crucial. They underpinned my interactions with diverse teams, stakeholder management, and presentations to C-level executives. The feedback I received during my internship, lauding my analytical approach, further attested to the real-world applicability of my MBA knowledge, underscoring its tangible impact in a professional setting.
At Acumen, one pronounced challenge was grappling with data inconsistencies across our portfolio companies. Varied data standards often led to gaps, making cohesive analyses arduous. These inconsistencies weren't mere absent values; they reflected broader market nuances, demanding strategic assumptions for precision. Beyond data, advocating for strategic changes in an organization as established as Acumen posed its own intricacies. Every proposal faced rigorous scrutiny, necessitating a blend of tact, clear communication, and foresight to ensure alignment with Acumen's ethos. Furthermore, interactions with senior leadership, while invaluable, mandated exhaustive preparation. I had to succinctly articulate complex strategies, foresee objections, and craft a narrative resonating with Acumen's legacy and future vision.
Acumen's internship was a profound learning curve. Beyond the intricate insights into impact investing and the pivotal role of data-driven decision-making, it was the softer, interpersonal learnings that were equally illuminating. Working in such a diverse environment exposed me to a myriad of management styles. Learning to navigate these varying approaches, understanding their nuances, and adapting my communication and collaboration strategies accordingly was invaluable. This experience, combined with the technical and strategic tasks, has equipped me with a holistic set of skills. As I progress in my career, these insights will act as a cornerstone, guiding me to synergize technical acumen with interpersonal adaptability.
