Internship Description

Hassan Riaz ’25 researched decarbonization pathways across various industries to help translate detailed technical reports into digestible articles, slide decks, and business school case studies, generally telling the kind of decarbonization success stories that help spur action.

As part of the Climate Knowledge Initiative (CKI), within the Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change, our team focused on developing actionable insights to accelerate the adoption of solar technologies. My specific role involved creating detailed benchmarks and models that evaluated the scalability, investability, and long-term impact of these technologies within different market contexts. By analyzing data from a wide range of industry sources, we provided business leaders with clear and practical guidance on where to focus their investments for maximum impact. This work was crucial in helping decision-makers identify the most promising opportunities in the solar sector, directly aligning with the initiative’s mission to provide curated, actionable knowledge. Additionally, our work emphasized the importance of understanding where business incentives might diverge from public interests, ensuring that our recommendations were not only financially sound but also ethically responsible and aligned with broader societal goals.

In this project, I applied several key skills from my MBA program, particularly in data analysis, strategic thinking, and project management. My coursework in Climate Finance and Sustainable Investment provided the necessary foundation to understand the complexities of solar technologies, their market potential, and the broader economic implications of their adoption. I utilized these analytical skills to create detailed benchmarks and models, which were essential in forming the basis of our actionable insights. Additionally, my experience as president of the Energy and Infrastructure Club at Columbia Business School (CBS), enabled me to effectively work with a multidisciplinary team, ensuring that our research was comprehensive, collaborative, and aligned with the overarching goals of the CKI. This collaborative approach allowed us to integrate diverse perspectives and expertise, ultimately enhancing the quality and relevance of our findings.

One of the main challenges I faced was creating a cohesive narrative within our solar insights deck, which was designed to guide business leaders in their decision-making processes. With data coming from over 20 industry sources, ensuring that the storyline was clear, consistent, and compelling required meticulous attention to detail and extensive cross-checking to maintain accuracy. Another significant challenge was managing the expectations of different stakeholders, particularly when presenting findings that highlighted substantial technological, economic, or regulatory roadblocks in scaling solar solutions. Balancing the need to provide actionable insights while addressing the complexities of these challenges was a delicate task. However, this process ultimately strengthened the impact of our recommendations by ensuring that they were realistic, actionable, and aligned with the broader goals of advancing the green transition, making them more valuable to our audience.

This experience deepened my understanding of the multifaceted challenges involved in advancing the green transition, particularly within the solar sector. Working on the solar insights deck provided me with a holistic view of the roadblocks facing the sector, including technological, economic, and political barriers that must be addressed to achieve widespread adoption. It met my goal of gaining a more comprehensive understanding of these obstacles, reinforcing the importance of a strategic and well-rounded approach to tackling them.

Moving forward, I aim to apply these insights to help shape strategies that overcome these barriers, ensuring that the transition to sustainable energy is both achievable and impactful. This experience has also underscored the importance of collaboration and the need for continuous learning to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving field of climate technology.
