Internship Description

Ka Lun Lee, ’20, interned with Phoenix Foundation, a crowdfunding fintech social venture based in Hong Kong with the goal of leveraging impact investing to end poverty. Ka Lun provided support to the organization in their efforts to operationalize their fellowship program, including selecting, convening, and supporting outstanding candidates to help improve their impact.

Phoenix Foundation was established by a group of professionals from 25 countries to promote resilience against adversity during COVID 19. Every year, Phoenix Foundation will select outstanding unsung heroes, namely Phoenix Fellows, who transformed from adversity to save others. Through their inspiring life stories, Phoenix Fellows will inspire the world for humanity.

I was in charge of a series of strategic initiatives for digital engagement including Rise At Home Social Media Challenge, Rise At Home Live, Resilience Quote, Resilience Online Workshops and COVID-19 virtual Social Innovation Weekend to reignite a sense of hope for humanity by gathering social innovative minds during this tough situation. Rise At Home was a social media campaign to promote staying at home to save lives during COVID-19. We invited people to share what they would do to stay happy at home and challenge their friends to share their ways of happiness at home.

My EMBA Global Asia training expanded my global networks with friends from Columbia Business School, London Business School, and the University of Hong Kong Business School enriched my business and marketing mindset and developed my interests on internet and social media marketing skills, such as how to develop effective campaigns, how to use content to drive engagements, etc.

I designed the Rise At Home Social Media Challenge and am honored to have consulted my classmate, Laurent Auzzino (LBS Sloan Fellow) who gave me advice for my work. I successfully drove the digital engagement strategy with a huge success for the Phoenix Foundation’s Facebook page with 1,200 percent engagements and 643 percent reach, as well as the Rise at Home social media challenge with over 100,000 engagements within a short time.

Although we expected to organize some physical events, COVID-19 relapsed in Hong Kong and we had to cancelled them and come up with new plans. The Personal Leadership and Success course reminded me that happiness is not from your achievements but upholding your values despite impermanence. This brings me strong purpose for life.

Thanks to the EMBA Global Asia program, I am proud to have had the support from 13 classmates who have strong purpose in life and inspired me with their life stories to continue to excel for humanity. We came up with a new idea that instead of conducting talks, we interviewed leaders across the globe to share their life story on resilience. We were very glad to feature my EMBA Global Asia classmate, Marc von Grabowski, president of MHE-Demag (Philippines) Inc. in our first leader story. The post attracted over 450 views ad engagements within a day!

On Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, I led the team to launch different initiatives to boost digital engagements through different campaigns, including online courses on YouTube, Failure Competition on Instagram, Resilience Quote on Facebook, and Resilience Video on LinkedIn with great feedback. We also hosted a monthly Zoom conference for engaging global audiences.

This unique summer fellowship gave me lots of inspiration in life about a purpose-driven career. It helped me to think deeper about my purpose in life, and I recalled Professor Sheena Iyengar asked me once, “how will you affect one billion people’s lives?” in my Leadership and Organizational Change courseI never. I never thought I would be given the opportunity to help people across the globe, to boost their resilience to face the tough epidemic situation. I really appreciate Tamer Center for Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship for inspiring me to realize my dream for pursuing an impactful career.

Lastly, I would like to share good news that with the invitation form the board of directors, I will take up a full-time position at this meaningful organization, Phoenix Foundation, to help humanity for relief and recovery from COVID-19 after my fellowship has ended.
