As a software engineer intern, I played a crucial role in building out Puberry’s web application, which will serve as a major learning tool for our consumers. Specifically, I spent the first half of the summer building out the frontend of the application, so that our user interface looked identical to the designs provided by our team. For the second half, I worked to pick a content management system that would serve Puberry in the long run, and eventually began to implement that system into our application.

My tasks aligned directly with the skills that I have accrued over the past three years studying computer science. Basic programming languages, user interface design and operating systems knowledge, collected from the diverse CS core curriculum, served me very well.

The main challenge working for a startup is the need to carve your own path and assign your own tasks based on what you think is needed. With a smaller staff comes greater autonomy over your own work. This afforded me a great deal of confidence that I will no doubt carry with me through my future career.

Through this experience, I finally realized that I am fully capable of pursuing a career as a software engineer or developer. This having been my first internship and experience applying my current education to real-world solutions, I of course entered with some doubts about my abilities, especially having come from a background in the arts. However, this internship has gifted me a valuable amount of knowledge, experience, and gratitude towards my employer, the University, and the Tamer institute.
