Internship Description

Swathi Pottabathini ’25SIPA interned with GramHeet, an agri-business startup that aims to transform Indian agriculture by establishing sustainable food systems that enhance farmer dignity and global food security. Swathi analyzed the business and financial models of the pilot Village Agroecological Resource Centres (VARCs), in order to improve the livelihoods of 45,000 smallholder farmers through 150 VARCs over the next three years.

During my internship at GramHeet, I focused on enhancing the operational efficiency of Village AgroEcological Resource Centres (VARCs), which is being piloted through documenting current processes and using data-driven approaches to identify improvements. VARCs aim to promote sustainable farming practices among smallholder farmers, aligning with GramHeet’s mission to create secure livelihoods for farmers while ensuring healthy food for consumers and environmental sustainability. These centers provide essential support such as bio-inputs, indigenous seeds, and market linkage services, empowering farmers to reduce cultivation costs and embrace climate-resilient agricultural practices. My role involved refining data collection methods, analyzing operational bottlenecks, and providing actionable insights to optimize processes. This work directly supports GramHeet’s immediate goal of running the pilot with 150 farmers in the Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, India, and contributes to the broader objective of establishing 150 VARCs over the next three years, impacting 45,000 farmers. Engaging in this project reinforced my commitment to using technology and data to address the urgent challenges of climate change in agriculture.

This internship allowed me to apply and expand upon the analytical, research, and finance skills I developed during my studies in development practice at Columbia's SIPA. I conducted in-depth secondary research on existing agro-ecological models worldwide and engaged in primary research through direct discussions with farmers and industry experts to define and understand key challenges. I also developed financial feasibility models to assess the scalability of VARCs and their potential impact on reducing farmers' costs and increasing profitability. This hands-on experience enabled me to connect classroom learning with real-world applications, deepening my understanding of sustainable agriculture and the challenges of implementing innovative models in rural settings. The practical skills I gained will be valuable in my future career, where I aim to contribute to policymaking and impact-driven initiatives in agriculture.

A significant ground-level challenge was consistently engaging farmers for focus group discussions, data collection, and training sessions. Many farmers were hesitant to adopt new sustainable practices due to limited understanding of the long-term benefits and skepticism toward unfamiliar methods. For example, farmers often expressed concerns about the effectiveness of bio-pesticides compared to traditional chemicals. Coordinating these interactions required patience and trust building through continuous engagement, often facilitated by local community-based organizations. This process was time-consuming and required adapting our approach to align with the farmers' schedules and priorities. Understanding the socio-economic realities of rural India and aligning solutions with local contexts were critical to overcoming these challenges. Working within a supportive team at GramHeet, I learned valuable lessons in stakeholder engagement, the importance of clear communication, and the need to develop practical solutions that resonate with the communities we aim to support.

This internship has been transformative, both in terms of technical skill enhancement and personal growth. Technically, I gained a deeper understanding of sustainable farming practices, data analytics, and the intricacies of financial modeling for impact assessment. The hands-on experience with VARCs provided a clearer view of the operational and strategic challenges faced by social enterprises in scaling sustainable solutions. Personally, this experience has reinforced my passion for using technology and data-driven approaches to address agricultural challenges posed by climate change. The exposure to on-the-ground realities of smallholder farmers and the opportunity to directly contribute to their well-being was incredibly rewarding. Moving forward, I am inspired to continue working at the intersection of technology, climate, and social impact, with a renewed commitment to creating scalable, sustainable solutions that empower vulnerable communities.
