Yuemeng (Monica) Wu, ’26BC, collaborated with Cobalt Water Global, Inc., a climate tech startup dedicated to decarbonizing the water sector. As part of the team, Monica contributed to the development of the N2ORisk DSS, the company's innovative AI/ML platform for addressing wastewater N2O process emissions. Through data analysis and research, Monica assisted in refining the platform's capabilities, enabling water utilities and industries to account for, reduce, and monitor their N2O emissions more effectively. This experience provided Monica with valuable insights into leveraging technology for sustainable environmental solutions.
During my internship at Cobalt Water Global, I worked on a multifaceted project that directly supported the company’s mission of promoting sustainable water management and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. My primary focus was on delivering N2O emissions reduction strategies for clients by conducting in-depth data analysis of water quality and wastewater processes. By synthesizing large datasets, I identified key risk factors contributing to N2O production, which is a potent greenhouse gas. This work aligned with Cobalt's commitment to developing innovative solutions that mitigate environmental impacts. In addition to technical analysis, I conducted research on carbon credits markets, exploring monetization pathways for N2O reductions. This research provided new strategic recommendations that expanded the company's capabilities in carbon finance, furthering its mission to lead in climate action. I also supported the company’s application to the Elemental Excelerator, which can not only enhance the company's financial resources, but also strengthen its position in the climate tech sector. Furthermore, I led outreach efforts on LinkedIn, targeting potential customers and stakeholders who could benefit from Cobalt's solutions. My contributions to LinkedIn posts helped raise awareness of the company’s activities, showcasing its innovations to a broader audience. I also conducted research on carbon removal technologies, NYC greenhouse gas inventories, and science-based targets, producing deliverables that informed strategic decisions at the executive level. Through these diverse tasks, my work at Cobalt not only advanced the company’s goals but also positioned it as a leader in the intersection of water management and climate change mitigation.
As an environment and sustainability major at Barnard, I had the opportunity to apply a range of skillsets I developed during my studies to my internship at Cobalt. The interdisciplinary nature of my major equipped me with a strong foundation in environmental science, data analysis, and policy, all of which were crucial to the work I undertook. One of the primary ways I applied my academic knowledge was through data analysis. My coursework in environmental systems and statistics provided me with the analytical tools to synthesize large datasets related to water quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and wastewater processes. I used these skills to identify key risk factors contributing to N2O emissions, directly aligning with the technical and environmental focus of my major. I also applied these skills for summarizing wastewater treatment plant N2O emissions. My major also emphasizes understanding the broader context of sustainability, including the intersection of environmental issues with economic and social factors. This was particularly relevant when I conducted research on carbon credits markets and identified monetization pathways for N2O reductions. The ability to integrate environmental science with economic strategies is something I honed during my studies, and it proved invaluable in providing strategic recommendations to Cobalt. Additionally, the communication skills I developed through my major played a key role in my outreach efforts on LinkedIn. I was able to effectively communicate complex environmental solutions to potential customers and stakeholders, ensuring that our message resonated with diverse audiences. My background in sustainability communication also helped in crafting LinkedIn posts that highlighted the company’s activities and impact. Overall, my academic background in environment and sustainability provided me with the technical knowledge, interdisciplinary perspective, and communication skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to Cobalt's mission. My internship allowed me to apply these skills in a real world setting, reinforcing the relevance and importance of my major.
During my internship, I faced several challenges that significantly enhanced my adaptability and problem solving skills. One major challenge was managing the complexity of large datasets related to water quality and wastewater emissions. These datasets often contained inconsistencies and gaps, making it difficult to extract accurate insights. To address this, I had to quickly become proficient in using Dataiku, a data analysis platform. Learning to navigate and leverage Dataiku allowed me to streamline data processing, identify key risk factors for N2O emissions, apply machine learning and improve the overall quality of my analysis. Another challenge involved navigating the complexities of the carbon credits market. While I had a foundational understanding of carbon finance from my academic background, applying this knowledge in a real world context required a deeper grasp of market mechanisms, regulatory frameworks, and monetization pathways for N2O reductions. I overcame this challenge by conducting extensive research and seeking advice from industry experts, which enabled me to provide valuable strategic recommendations to the company. Balancing multiple responsibilities also proved challenging, as I was involved in tasks ranging from technical data analysis to outreach and communication. Managing my time effectively and prioritizing tasks was essential to ensure that all project aspects were completed successfully. This experience taught me the importance of time management and adaptability, particularly in a fast-paced, dynamic environment like a climate tech startup. Engaging potential customers and stakeholders on LinkedIn presented another challenge. Crafting messages that effectively communicated the value of Cobalt's solutions to a diverse audience required creativity and precision. Through this experience, I honed my communication skills and learned to present complex ideas in a clear and accessible manner. These challenges not only strengthened my technical and professional skills but also provided invaluable learning experiences that will benefit my future endeavors.
