Yunxi Yang, '24PH, interned with Tamer Fund for Social Ventures portfolio member Thimble, a healthcare startup founded to alleviate needle pain and foster a more compassionate health care environment. Her project involved leveraging her expertise in biostatistics and data analytics to design impactful solutions for both business and public health. Yunxi spearheaded the design and implementation of survey and surveillance tools to gather customer feedback on Recover Patch and extracted actionable insights from complex data through comprehensive analyses. She also worked under the supervision of the CEO to identify non-dilutive funding opportunities and assess the public health impact of the product.

During my time at Thimble, I was deeply immersed in projects that resonated with my passion for biostatistics and public health.

I vividly recall the initial excitement I felt when entrusted with the User Validation Test for the Prepare Patch. Holding the patch, I thought of the countless individuals who feared needles, instilling in me a profound sense of responsibility. Designing and conducting the user validation test wasn't merely a task; it was a mission to render medical experiences less daunting for these individuals. The goal was to ensure the feasibility and usability of our pre-needle procedure pain relief patch. This involved crafting a validation protocol, recruiting participants, conducting tests, gathering direct user feedback, and aligning the product with market needs.

While working on the NIH AAP SBIR Grant Application for our Thimble App's Phase I study, in collaboration with Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), I found another deeply meaningful endeavor. This required meticulous planning and execution. I drafted clear project milestones and data management plans while detailing rigor and statistical considerations from a biostatistician's viewpoint. The study aimed to mitigate pain and anxiety from needle procedures using a combined approach: pre- and post-procedure pain-relief patches and the Thimble App, which employs evidence-based techniques for pain and anxiety management. We had specific objectives to improve app accessibility, evaluate its use by patients and caregivers, and ascertain its integration into health care professionals'routines.

Furthermore, my responsibilities included data analytics, vital for promoting evidence-based decision-making within Thimble. Using Python and Tableau, I delved into extensive survey data, gleaning key insights about user sentiments towards needle pain and Thimble's solutions. These findings weren't mere statistics; they represented genuine feelings of people seeking a more compassionate healthcare experience. Each time my insights aligned with Thimble's mission, it felt like a triumph.

My overarching realization from this journey was that behind every dataset, grant application, or usability test lies a human story. And at Thimble, I was fortunate to contribute to those stories, making health care a bit kinder for many.

The robust curriculum at Columbia's graduate program in biostatistics under the Mailman School of Public Health was pivotal in shaping my contributions at Thimble. Specifically, the knowledge acquired from the Data Science course equipped me with the acumen to navigate intricate data cleaning tasks and adeptly handle data visualization. Meanwhile, my training in the courses of Biostatistical Methods was invaluable when it came to composing statistical considerations for our projects; it honed my ability to ascertain appropriate sample sizes and ensure the power of tests for our Phase I research proposal. Furthermore, my Foundation in Public Health courses provided an insightful understanding of the health care landscape, allowing me to assimilate seamlessly into Thimble's context. Complementing this, my extensive literature research, particularly from sources like PubMed, fortified my approach during the User Validation Test design and Phase I study design. In essence, my academic journey at Columbia not only equipped me with technical prowess but also ensured its effective application in the dynamic environment of a health care startup like Thimble.

Transitioning from my academic environment at Columbia to the nuances of a health care startup like Thimble was a distinct experience, offering its own set of learning curves. While my studies equipped me with proficiency in biostatistics and public health, applying these theoretical frameworks in the agile environment of Thimble required adaptability. For instance, my role in designing the User Validation Test and Phase I research proposal entailed not only statistical precision but also an awareness of the broader health care landscape. As I endeavored to assimilate user feedback into actionable insights or align with external entities like CHLA, I was faced with the challenge of integrating regulatory nuances and industry-specific protocols into my approach. These were elements I hadn't extensively covered in my academic pursuits, and initially, they posed roadblocks.

Furthermore, as I delved deep into the technical and operational facets, adapting to Thimble's unique organizational culture introduced a new dimension to my experience. Adapting to the ethos, understanding the startup's unique mission, and ensuring that my contributions were in sync demanded continuous learning. Certainly, managing extensive datasets and formulating intricate budget calculations from a remote setting had its share of challenges. Given Thimble's team's collaborative nature and my familiarity with face-to-face discussions from my time at university, virtual interactions sometimes resulted in brief delays and slight miscommunications. However, this remote setup provided a unique opportunity to explore and contribute to Thimble's vision, making the entire journey a blend of learning and growth.

Reflecting on my time at Thimble, a profound takeaway is that while technical acumen in biostatistics and data science is vital, the art of integrating with an organization's mission and culture is equally indispensable. While my central role revolved around data analytics and research design, observing the Thimble team's dedication to aligning their strategies with patient care and impact was enlightening. It underscored the importance of laying groundwork for future healthcare solutions. As someone keen on bridging data-driven approaches with tangible healthcare outcomes, it was pivotal for me to comprehend the daily operations of healthcare startups beyond just data crunching.

Thimble's mission to foster a compassionate healthcare environment enriched my experience further, resonating with my aspirations to champion innovative solutions addressing pressing healthcare challenges. The exposure to product development, user validation tests, and interactions with various stakeholders provided a holistic view of the multi-faceted world of health care startups.

Engaging in hands-on tasks like data management, formulating research strategies, and nurturing stakeholder relationships deepened my appreciation for the intricacies behind developing solutions that aim for both improved patient care and organizational growth. This experience with Thimble has undoubtedly strengthened my foundational knowledge, shaping a path where I can seamlessly merge my expertise in biostatistics with impactful contributions to the health care domain.
