Overview

Columbia Business School’s Social Enterprise and International Development Clubs will host the 7th Annual Social Enterprise Conference. This year’s Conference, “The Moment of NOW: Market Innovations in Social Enterprise,” will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008 at The Riverside Church, steps away from Columbia University’s Morningside Campus in New York City. The Conference coincides with the annual Botwinick Award, a distinction that is bestowed upon an outstanding leader, individual or representative of a business organization, exemplifying the highest standard of professional or ethical conduct. The recipient and keynote speaker this year is Jeff Immelt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Electric Corporation.

Columbia Business School recognizes that people working in every sector are capable of generating smart solutions to social and environmental problems by the application of business acumen. Accordingly, the Conference will inspire all audiences by demonstrating how social enterprise principles and practices are being put into action. The Conference will examine the ways in which private, public and nonprofit practitioners are crossing traditional barriers to enable social and environmental change. Significant strides have been made across all sectors and industries – with nonprofit organizations making financial sustainability a part of their core mission, Fortune 500 companies becoming environmental leaders and new market mechanisms being developed to eradicate global health issues, among others. “The Moment of NOW” will create the opportunity for MBAs, professionals and academics to partake in redefining the role of social enterprise in this ever-changing global market.

The Social Enterprise Club empowers students to create social value in private and public enterprises. The Club provides networking opportunities and educational experiences for a range of social enterprise careers including: nonprofit management and consulting, corporate social responsibility, for-profit entrepreneurial endeavors, venture philanthropy, government and public finance, microfinance and community and international development.

The International Development Club provides a forum for MBAs seeking careers at the interface of business and international development and creates opportunities for MBA students to consult to nonprofits, public sector organizations, small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures in developing countries.

The Social Enterprise Program aims to inspire and prepare leaders who create social value in business, nonprofit and government organizations locally, nationally and internationally. The Program supports a broad range of activities that help expose students to the breadth and depth of social enterprise.

The Leadership and Ethics Board of the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center aims to foster a culture and safeguard a tradition of principled leadership throughout the Columbia Business School community. The Board fulfills its purpose by developing, implementing and monitoring programs that cultivate leadership, build character and promote ethical decision-making, which, in turn, enables Columbia Business School students to become productive, moral and caring participants in their companies and communities.

Greening The Conference - The 2008 Social Enterprise Conference event organizers recognize the necessity of lessening the conference’s environmental impact and have taken steps to do this while simultaneously providing a thought-provoking and memorable day for the 600 conference attendees. Greening efforts include: recycling, composting, providing eco-friendly tableware, water jugs, compostable cups and Green Biz Clubrecycled paper for all printed items, among others. Please help us in our efforts and feel free to ask conference volunteers for more details on how we have reduced waste, supported local businesses and decreased our energy usage.

The Social Enterprise Conference 2008 is presented by the Columbia Business School's Social Enterprise Club and the International Development Club with the support of the Social Enterprise Program, Energy Club, Microlumbia Fund, Healthcare Industry Association and Green Business Club, and our generous sponsors.
